I feel like my entire life has been thrown aside because I have no time for anything but school. I guess that's the reality of being a student.

Elam is really great so far but it is also extremely difficult. The classes aren't traditional in any way shape or form. Basically, we're given a rough idea for an assignment and then left on our own until the end of the term. We're expected to be doing at least 40 weekly hours of research and studio work on the side (that's not including regular class studio sessions and lectures on the weekdays). There are no material lists, no specific goals or ends. It's purely independent study.

This is a course for the self motivated. I love the freedom to pursue any subject I want, but if I set a goal I have to put in research and studio work to accompany every step I take. I spend hours in the library, hours in the studio (working at home is discouraged), and hours of trying to learn the basics of drawing and painting. It's required that we experiment in different mediums too, so I'm forced to venture out of what I'm comfortable with and learn other techniques by myself. If I keep putting up work that looks really good, the tutors will know I'm not challenging myself.


I really love it, but I feel so worn down.

At least I've made friends. I have a cosy little table to work at each day and good conversation.
